If you're a collector fly angler, then you already know about the wonderful benefits of bamboo. However, with so many options on the market for you to choose from, where do you really begin? Some people could literally go broke if they tried to purchase every bamboo rod out there, so for this reason alone, we've taken the time to review some of the collectible bamboo fly rods that are being sold. You can also go with a hand built rod, however, you have to make sure that you are dealing with a craftsmen who's name will carry on, and allow your rod to become a vintage collectible.
1 - Original Tonkin 2 piece 7 weight 9 foot Bamboo Fly Rod
Tonkin bamboo cane is among the strongest types of hardwood bamboo, and makes an excellent wood for fly rod construction. These rods come in either a neutral maple finish, or one of the darker rosewood or walnut finishes.
2 - Orvis Adirondack Full Flex Bamboo Fly Fishing Rod
This 5 weight, full flex 7 1/2 foot weighs in at a healthy 4.1 ounces. The Adirondack is still considered one of the finest bamboo rods on the market due to it's incredibly lightweight and ultra smooth casting. While it's not a traditional split cane rod, the Adirondack still tops the charts as a collectors item.
3 - Orvis Limited Edition Flea Bamboo Fly Rods
Hand built right here in the United States, and produced for only one year, the limited edition Flea rods are perfect for presenting flies to wary fish in streams. The 6 1/2 ft 4 wet is modeled after the 1960's version and upgraded with Orvis' hand engraved blued nickel hardware. This is one that you'll pass onto your grandchildren.
4 - Scott Hand Built Bamboo Fly Rods
Scott teamed up with the award winning master cane builder Bernard Ramanauskus to produce these amazing hand crafted rods. They have a unique taper with a hollow blank for increased casting distance and smoothness, as well as node stabilization and other advanced rod building techniques that make it one of the most balanced and lightest bamboo fly rods on the market.
5 - Hardy Gladstone Split Cane Bamboo Rod
Callum Gladstone has put his more than 2 decades of experience into hand building each one of these rods. A few words come to mind when you think about the Hardy Gladstone: pride, excellence, expertise, passion, and experience. Hardy knows what they're doing with their rods, from over 150 years of building them, and made a wise decision teaming up with Callum for this build.
6 - Orvis Penn's Creek Full Flex Bamboo Rod
This is the smallest, lightest weight rod on the list, coming in at 4 weight lines, 7ft 2 piece split bamboo construction. The rod itself is just over 3.5 ounces, making it great for throwing lightweight flies on streams both small and large, as long as the water is down. They provide an incredibly fast action with a light and flexible tip to give you great strength and sensitivity.
7 - Limited Edition Orvis Mitey Mite Rod And Janciuras Perfection #1 Reel
What needs to be said about this reel, really? If you weren't around for the release of the original Mitey Mite in the 1960's, you're going to have to do yourself a favor and buy into this piece of history. Only 10 are being produced, so once they're gone, they're gone. Orvis teamed the Mitey Mite rod up with a hand built Janciuras Perfection #1 reel that provides an incredibly smooth action. This one will be hard to pass on through the generations.
