Bamboo Flooring Care

Protect Your Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo flooring care is just as important as the process of researching, choosing, buying, and installing your bamboo flooring.

You invest a lot of time making the decision which flooring to buy and install after a considerable amount of deliberating, followed by financial investment installing it properly and with care, you definitely need the knowledge about caring for your flooring to ensure it stays looking its best and lasts for years to come.

Once your bamboo floor has been installed you can sit back and admire its beauty but expecting it to stay in a pristine and ‘like new’ condition without knowing how to care for the floor is not the way to preserve your investment.

Maintenance

When you buy bamboo flooring there will normally be some care and maintenance instructions that are provided by the manufacturer or supplier. Do take the time to read these instructions on bamboo flooring care as all types of flooring are different and need different care and maintenance.

If your supplier did not provide you with care instructions when you purchased the flooring when you had it installed, it would be recommended that you contact them directly for that information as they should have provided it. They will give you the advice that relates to the specific floor and installation that you had, whereas if you take advice from elsewhere it may not be specific for your floor type and therefore be wrong.

The person most qualified to provide you with this after sales information about the product, or advise you on how to care for your floor, is the supplier or the company who manufactured it.

A Guide to Best Practice

If you’re not able to get these instructions or information from the manufacturer or supplier for any reason, or simply want to do your own research to back up any instructions you have been given, the following provides tips about the general practice of bamboo flooring care.

If you follow these general practices it will help you to maximize the beauty and durability of your new floor

  • To prevent moisture, sand, and grit from being brought into your home and onto your floor, lay non-abrasive rugs or mats at the entrances and doorways. Carpeting that is colorfast and non-scratch is the best choice and it is also wise to place it in high traffic areas of you flooring too. Check with the manufacturers that it will not produce any chemical reaction with the floor.

  • When you dust, vacuum, or mop your flooring, be sure to use a soft accessory to make sure that you do not drag dust and grit across the flooring surface and scratch it.

  • When washing the floor, do not apply any harsh detergents, abrasives, or chemicals. Bamboo flooring care is such that it is alright to clean it with generic hardwood flooring cleaner. If you can’t get a hardwood floor cleaner the following is an alternative that you can use: mix one quarter of a cup of white vinegar with a quart of water. Work this on small areas drying each area prior to continuing to the next area. See, How to Clean Bamboo Floors

  • If you have a bamboo floor installed in a bathroom or kitchen try to use mats where possible. Using mats will prevent excessive water spills from entering the surface of the floor. If you do not want to make use of mats you can simply clean up spills as soon as possible using a soft and dry cloth.

  • If you have any potted plants to place on the floor make sure you place a tray under the plant pot to capture any escaping water. Also, it is better if there is some air flowing underneath the tray so choose pots that are slightly raised of the floor.

  • All wooden floors are best kept by not walking on the flooring with in high heeled shoes and protection from furniture legs should be used.

  • Do not drag or push furniture across bamboo floors, ensure you carry furniture if you need to move it.

  • Pest claws can do considerable damage to natural flooring so do try to keep any pets claws well trimmed.

  • To prevent your floor from fading in areas where sunlight or UV rays are likely to come into window areas, install tinted windows, curtains, or bamboo blinds, where there is likely to be prolonged or high levels of sunlight.

As I initially suggested, it is best to get advice and recommendations from the supplier of your bamboo flooring first.
